This position is responsible for directing the Manufacturing Sciences (MS) organization in Round Lake, Illinois. This position will be a part of the site Senior Leadership Team and will thus contribute to the overall strategy of the site. This position will share accountability with the other members of the Senior Leadership Team in meeting the goals and objectives of the Round Lake site. The Head of MS&T will be responsible for a small team including Engineer/(Data) Scientist. Key in this role is the coaching of the team, their development and providing direction of strategies that will drive the achievements of the companies' business objectives. He/She will be a driver in datamining, ensuring data is used to set the future. The primary roles of the Manufacturing Sciences team are to provide technical support for the manufacturing operations, and to drive improvements and innovations to the operation. This position interacts closely with the broader plasma network in Takeda to help drive the overall plasma strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct and develop the Manufacturing Sciences and Technology team, which will consist of at least one other person.
  • As a member of the site Senior Leadership Team (SLT), contribute to the short and long term strategy for the site.
  • Work with all functions to insure site goals and objectives are met.
  • Along with the other SLT members, drive compliance to the company and site culture down to all levels of the organization.
  • Responsible for technical aspects of the day to day operations.
  • Drive life cycle improvements and innovation in the manufacturing operations.
  • Work with the global plasma network to insure the corporate strategy and goals are met.
  • Assure process robustness and supply reliability by controlling the manufacturing process life cycle from process / product development and authority submission to routine production.
  • Responsible for providing current yield data and accurate yield forecasts together with strategies to meet the yield targets.
  • Evaluate the suitability of new technologies for the implementation in manufacturing and work with relevant functions to ensure successful transition to the manufacturing floor.
  • Ensure compliance with current GMP and other regulatory requirements.
  • Support and drive Continuous Improvement initiatives and culture, including Lean, Six Sigma, standard work, visuals, and DMAIC methods to improve the manufacturing operations and to determine causes of product failures or process shifts.


  • Strong leader with ability to influence others at site and across the network when necessary.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Biochemistry and engineering principals.
  • Strong knowledge of fill/finish operations.
  • Broad knowledge and experience within the GMP environment.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement principals, including lean and SixSigma.
  • Experience with Regulatory Affairs and working with auditors.
  • Very successful track record of change management projects and processes.
  • High level of customer responsiveness and organizational skills.
  • Enthusiastic, decisive, motivating and convincing personality.
  • International background appreciated.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education and/or experience

  • Technical degree in scientific discipline or engineering discipline, preferably biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, or chemical engineering.
  • At least 10 years professional experience in a similar role in the field of Technical Operations, Process Management, or Manufacturing within the pharmaceutical industry, preferably including fill/finish experience. At least 3 years experience managing other technical employees.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 30 lbs.
  • In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing conditions in the facility.

Working Environment

  • Must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.
  • No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in the manufacturing environment.
  • Must be able to work multiple shifts, including weekends as needed.
  • May be required to work in a confined area.
