Job Description


As an intern in Discovery M&S group at TCAL, under the direction of a senior modeling and simulation expert in the group, you will support development of a quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) model of irritable bowel disease (IBD) through the following activities:

  • perform literature searches, collates and evaluates clinical and preclinical data
  • develop a database for QSP model parameterization and validation
  • build QSP model framework and assess its developability based on available data
  • develop QSP model


  • Help identify appropriate published and internal data (e.g. indications, dosages, clinical endpoints, biomarkers, pharmacokinetics, in vitro data, in vivo data, pharmacology model data) and verify their quality with members of Takeda Immunology group
  • Put together an IBD mathematical model structure with a list of required model parameters by working with members of the M&S group
  • Evaluate the ability to develop the model based on gathered data
  • Expected hours: 10 - 20 hours while school is in session; up to 40 hours during school breaks


  • Undergraduate student (third or fourth year students preferred) in good academic standing with a major in a quantitative field (engineering, science, etc)
  • Highly motivated with an interest in translational research, quantitative analysis, and mathematical modeling.
  • Course(s) on Systems of Differential Equations
  • Hands-on mathematical modeling experience
  • Tools: expertise with Microsoft Excel required, exposure to MATLAB preferred
