As a Scientist I - Immunobiology, you will be empowered to support therapeutic and pipeline programs and serve as an In vitro Pharmacologist lead on projects. In this role, you will contribute to Takeda s mission and a typical day will include:

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE

The Immunobiology group within GI Immunology Research at Takeda California is seeking an experienced Immunologist with extensive understanding of immunological pathways and mechanisms specifically related to autoimmunity and IBD biology. The successful candidate will independently design and implement experiments to address immunological mechanisms-of-action of therapeutic molecules from concept to data interpretation. The candidate will be expected to apply expertise across a number of practical skills, including gene editing techniques, molecular biology, primary cell culture, flow cytometry and cell-based assays. The role is a lab based research scientist who will also be responsible for participating on matrixed project teams, interfacing very closely with members of the Immunology, GI DDU and Global Biologics teams to design and optimize relevant invitro assays to support translational efforts by bridging discovery and development projects.

  • Supporting therapeutic and pipeline programs: Will entail small molecule, biologic and other modality screening including HT assay development, and MoA assays using cell lines and primary immune cells (epithelial assay systems, myofibroblast assay systems, immune cells -T cells, DCs etc.) and serve as an In vitro Pharmacologist lead on various programs
  • Spends 80% time in the laboratory, including hands on mentoring of scientists
  • Supporting activities and ideas originating from New Ideas team, Shark Tank activities, SAA collaborations- This will include assay development and validation studies (primary cells, RNASeq analysis); data analysis, Flow cytometry work)
  • Supporting activities from in vivo team: Human and mouse exvivo assays, Exvivo analysis from tissue biopsies
  • Molecular biology support as needed for CAR-T and gdT cell work

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Supports therapeutic and pipeline programs: Will entail small molecule, biologic and other modality screening including HT assay development, and MoA assays using cell lines and primary immune cells (epithelial assay systems, myofibroblast assay systems, immune cells -T cells, DCs etc.).
  • Serve as an In vitro Pharmacologist lead on projects
  • Supporting Pre-PS and PS activities and ideas originating from New Ideas team, Shark Tank activities, SAA collaborations- This will include assay development and validation studies (primary cells, RNASeq analysis); data analysis, Flow cytometry work
  • Supporting activities from in vivo team: Human and mouse exvivo assays, Exvivo analysis from tissue biopsies
  • Molecular biology support as needed for CAR-T and gdT cell work
  • Prepares and presents comprehensive technical or project reports and formal presentations / posters to full range of internal/external audiences
  • Contributes to the development of new translatable invitro mechanistic assay's to explores disease mechanisms and mechanism of drug action, demonstrating proof of concept for novel therapeutic targets
  • Interprets results of complex experiments
  • Utilizes relevant information, technology and resources, contributing to complex team problem resolution and objectives eg. RNASeq analysis
  • Identifies, plans and executes well defined scientific projects
  • Maintains concise, accurate, and comprehensible written records as per Takeda California policy.
  • Collaborates/interacts closely with other scientists from internal and external teams and institutions.
  • Demonstrates theoretical knowledge and proficiency in immunological concepts preferably related to autoimmune or inflammatory diseases
  • Demonstrates ability to design and execute well thought out assays to provide support and advance pipeline projects and early IBD therapeutic concepts
  • Has the scientific awareness of various assay platforms that can be applied. Keeps current with emerging trends.
  • Independently investigates new immunological techniques, that can be applied to team projects
  • Serves as the Invtro immunobiology lead on projects providing key scientific feedback to advance programs in a matrixed environment.
  • Participates in and supervises external interactions and collaborations with companies and academic research groups and potential collaborator
  • Has advanced scientific knowledge in immunology and or microbome

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • PhD in Immunology/Cell Biology or MS with 6 years experience
  • Has demonstrated independent scientific expertise and creativity.
  • Extensive hands-on experience and knowledge in a wide range of immunological HT assays using cell lines and primary immune cells including T cells, B cells, Macrophages and dendritic cells to design new approaches for anti-inflammatory mechanisms with a focus on biologics discovery and development is expected.
  • An understanding of the design and use of chimeric antigen receptors in cell therapy is highly desirable
  • Experience in the design and construction of mammalian expression vectors and cell transfection and/or viral-mediated cell transduction, preferably of primary immune cells is highly desired
  • Hands on experience and ability to work with minimum supervision in carrying out high throughput data acquisition, analysis, storage and reporting by FACS CANTO, FACS ARIA, ELISA, Luminex, MSD and other flow based cytokine assays is required.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture with best practices in tissue culture is required
  • Experience with primary human cells and tissues is strongly is required
  • An understanding of the design and use of chimeric antigen receptors in cell therapy is highly desirable
  • Use of scientific databases and application for data management and data analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • Excellent team player with a can-do attitude with an ability to thrive in a dynamic biotech- like environment and work in cross-functional project teams
  • Innovative and critical thinking
  • Self-motivated, collaborative with excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to advance multiple projects in a fast paced biotech like environment

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to travel to various meetings, including overnight trips.
  • Requires approximately 0-5% travel.
