As an Associate Director / Principal Scientist working on the Gastroenterology Drug Discovery Unit team, you will be empowered to work cross-functionally with Data Science and Immunology divisions and contribute to better understanding of new indication within GI disease area, and a typical day will include:

The next generation biology group collaborates with multiple stake holders within and outside of Takeda to identify novel drug targets and bring them into the development pipeline as well as develop the next wave of therapies such as cellular/gene therapy for gastrointestinal diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, liver and enteric nervous system disease. The growing team will have foundations in computational biology, engineering, synthetic chemistry and biology. We are looking for a dynamic and driven individual with state of the art computational and data analytics skills to join our growing group. The group will fundamentally leverage big data across multiple partnerships to bring the best drug candidates and approaches forward into our early development pipeline including single cell and microbiome analytics. Thus, the person we are seeking will be an integral part of the drug discovery process as key leader to deliver on our goals in the larger GI Drug Discovery Unit composed of a matrixed group of approximately 60 individuals and have wide visibility within the organization and among our academic and biotech partners.

  • Help formulate and lead a data analytics strategy for the gastroenterology external and internal collaborations.
  • Leverage large omic and clinical datasets to identify novel drug targets, stratify patients, identify biomarkers
  • Interface with internal computational/data science colleagues at the Takeda Data Sciences Institute and the translational medicine group who are key collaborators of the GI Drug Discovery Unit
  • Actively develop and manage data analyses insights as well as methodology development with our external partnerships with both biotechs and key academic groups to ensure milestones, deliverables are met in terms of timelines and expectations of data quality.
  • Be a resource of computational systems biology approaches for various types of groups in the GI DDU including chemists, wet-lab scientists, pharmacology
  • Execute on specific focused projects using standard genomic analyses.
  • Participate in due diligences of external opportunities when needed.


  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Mathematics, or Computational Biology with a minimum of 5 years experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience with large-scale omics and high though put data analysis, network analysis, and meta-analyses.
  • Familiar with public domain data sources.
  • Experience in algorithm generation and/or computational method implementation.
  • Strong scientific understanding of molecular biology and genomics.
  • Proven track record of driving a significant scientific or technological project to success.
  • Fluency in at least one programming language (e.g., Phython, Perl, R, C/C++, Matlab).
  • Familiarity optimally with parallel computing, database (e.g., SQL) and Amazon Web Services.


  • The position is base in Cambridge, MA.
  • Requires approximately 15% or more travel, including international travel.
