As the subject matter expert on publication strategy, the Senior Publications Manager develops publication strategic plan based on medical strategies, publication obligations, and data availability and acts as consultant to the Global Medical Strategy Team communication working group. The Senior Publications Manager understands how the publication activities contribute to the overall medical affairs communications plan for the assigned programs and therapeutic area; directs the development and execution of the publication tactical plan across assigned programs within a therapeutic area; and interacts with all levels of medical affairs (ie, global, regional, local) to ensure inclusion of those activities in the global publication plan
Ensure Takeda s company-sponsored publication activities are conducted according to good publication practices (including, but not limited to ICMJE, GPP2, CONSORT, etc) and Takeda s Global Publication Standard, SOP, and applicable practice guidelines
Responsible for providing program-level updates, including progress against strategy, timelines & budget, to the GMST ensuring that any publication issues, with proposed solutions, are escalated to the appropriate management team (ie, Global Publications or GMST)
Oversight of vendor partners to ensure appropriate and adequate coverage of assigned programs, publication team meetings, and execution of publication plans; ensure vendor partners are properly trained on Takeda Standards, SOPs, systems, and tools for appropriate and effective execution of responsibilities, including interactions with alliance partners, authors (internal and external), as well as company data-generators, statisticians, and reviewers; ensure vendor partners appropriately lead and manage publication working teams and author meetings and provide requested updates in a timely manner and an appropriate format; continuous assessment of vendor partner s performance; timely elevation of vendor service and performance issues to Global Publications management
Management of the budget for assigned programs, including Master Service Agreements, Project Work Orders, Change Orders, invoice approval and financial reconciliation process; closely coordinate budget reporting with the GMA PMO; responsible for appropriate tracking and reporting of transfer of value according to applicable transparency rules and regulation (eg, US Sunshine Act)
Represent Global Publications on cross functional teams, including, but not limited to, GMST working groups; may be asked to lead or contribute to department meetings
Work with the vendors to ensure publication plan objectives are met, on time and within budget. Identify and liaise with vendor partners to support either regional/local contributions to global publication plans; provide guidance to medical affairs affiliates on publication activities; act as subject-matter-expert consult to departments and medical affairs offices (regional or local) in matters of Takeda-sponsored publications
The assigned publication programs will be global or multinational, may be large and complex, and of business importance to Takeda and Takeda s reputation, requiring multi-functional leadership experience and skills to achieve program goals

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Lead the publication strategic planning activities, including identification of key scientific messages based on research data and tactical planning; contribute to GMA medical communications plans; lead tactical planning and oversee tactical execution of publication plans, resource management, and budget planning; appropriately delegate tasks to vendor to ensure coverage across assigned program
  • Act as first point of contact for affiliate offices, internal business partners, and management on publication-related issues, including, but not limited to, vendor access, training, system issues, and good publication practices.
  • Ability to work independently and apply principles of good publication practices to daily activities, including execution of publication plans, vendor management, interaction with affiliate offices, and contributions to medical communications strategies and plans
  • Manage vendor partners to effectively and efficiently execute the tactical plan for assigned publication programs according to Takeda Standards, SOPs, and related good publication practices guidelines
  • Ensure publication working teams for assigned programs are functioning to meet the program objectives, on time and within budget
  • Ensure aggregate spend is being tracked and reported
  • Collaborate with Global Publications management on Takeda Global Publications Standard and SOP updates; contribute to development and implementation of applicable function-level work instructions
  • Collaborate with vendor partners on feasibility assessments, resource forecasting, identifying risk to successful development and execution of publication tactical plan, and risk mitigation plans
  • Responsible for day-to-day management of vendor partners working on assigned programs, including setting expectations, training, managing timelines and deliverables, performance assessment and management, Project Work Orders, Change Orders, invoice approval and financial reconciliation process for assigned study.
  • Contributes to the evaluation and selection of vendor partners, including contract and budget negotiation. Provides Global Publications and GMST management input to other important publication activities, including but not limited to: availability of study information on ct.gov, conference presentations, progress against strategy, changes in budget, author issues that may affect KOL engagement activities, activities that may impact other medical communication activities
  • Escalates publication issues (eg, vendor performance, product quality, ethical issues, etc) to Global Publications management
  • Provide regular budget updates to GMA Project Manager or Finance when requested.
  • May be asked to participate in issue management and risk mitigation for publication programs assigned to other Publication Managers.
  • Able to assist Associate Director, Global Publications, when necessary
  • Leads or provides expert input on behalf of Global Publications on cross functional initiatives
  • Act as a role model for Takeda s values

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

Skills:
  • Ability to work independently
  • High-level understanding of issues related to publication of industry-sponsored research results; ability to practically apply policy, SOP, and applicable guidelines to daily activities to ensure the appropriate and compliant planning and execution of publication.
  • Solid teamwork, organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving skills; exercises good judgment with respect to Takeda s reputation, confidential information, and strategies
  • Fluent business English (oral and written)
  • Excellent communication skills in a variety of formats (eg, written, e-mail, official company documents, presentations)
Experience:
  • 6+ years in the medical communications industry, either via the pharmaceutical industry or medical communications company.
  • 6+ years actively managing vendors
  • Experience working in multiple therapeutic areas is required
  • Experience and knowledge of clinical trial reports, data presentation, and interpretation
  • Publication strategy, tactical planning, and plan execution, including interaction with authors
  • Leading cross-functional and global teams
  • Managing large budgets to achieve program goals

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Manual dexterity required to operate office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, etc.).

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • May require approximately 20% travel, including overnight and international travel to conferences, other Takeda sites, strategic partners, and therapeutic area related travel.
