As a member of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic (DMPK) group at TCAL, Biotransformation (BT) Group has expanded its role from discovery to early development through the conduct of in vitro and in vivo drug metabolism studies designed to understand biotransformation pathways/routes of elimination of small molecules to guide synthetic efforts and to identify potentially active/reactive metabolites/fragments. Additionally, BT group has broadened its focus to conduct additional mechanistic studies, when necessary, to address common challenges including toxicity issues and understand clearance mechanism of drug candidate. To assist in this expanded role and broadened focus, the summer intern will help generate necessary data to address project specific needs, mitigate any DMPK issues at early discovery stage and thus drive projects forward.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Assists in the conduct of in vitro and in vivo drug metabolism studies designed to understand biotransformation pathways/routes of elimination of small molecules to guide synthetic efforts and to identify potentially active/reactive metabolites/fragments.
  • Assists in the conduct of additional mechanistic studies, when necessary, to address common challenges including toxicity issues and understand clearance mechanism of drug candidate

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Undergraduate student in good academic standing/record with a focus in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry or a related field (Second or Third year students preferred)
  • Some hands-on experience and/or theoretical understanding of mass spectrometric equipment for the purposes of structure elucidationincluding interpreting mass spectral data
  • Fundamental knowledge in chemistry including some basic and advanced organic/medicinal chemistry classes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly oral and written communication skills
  • Some understanding of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of compounds with emphasis on biotransformation.
  • Collaborate in a team environment with both internal members of the group as well as discovery project teams
  • Students must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Expected hours: 10 - 20 hours while school is in session; up to 40 hours during school breaks
