Takeda is seeking a talented and inspirational person to lead the California-based Immunology Unit, which focuses on therapeutic opportunities to treat disorders of the Gastro-intestinal (GI) tract and Takeda s growing franchise in the GI space. In this role, the Site-Head of GI Immunology will work closely with the Head of Immunology and the broader GI Takeda organization, to lead a talented group of researchers, utilize Takeda s array of next-generation technologies and join a network of expert partners in academia and biotech, to best address the needs of patients suffering from GI-related diseases.


  • Based in San Diego, this leader manages a team of immunology and immuno-biologics researchers working with internal and external partners to advance the next-generation of innovative and differentiated small molecule and biologics development candidates for Takeda s gastroenterology (GI) portfolio.
  • Reports to Immunology Unit Head, based in Boston, to ensure aligned support for Takeda s therapeutic areas by leveraging cutting-edge immunology platforms and resources.
  • Identifies immunology opportunities from external and internal sources aligned with the portfolio strategy of the GI-TAU (Therapeutic Area Unit), and works in a matrixed manner with researchers and experts in GI-DDU (Drug Discovery Unit), under one portfolio governance for Takeda GI.
  • Provides expert input to projects plans and portfolio prioritization decisions across all indications of interest including IBD, celiac disease, liver disease and motility disorders
  • Provides support and/or oversight of programs up to clinical proof-of-mechanism/ proof-of-concept in partnership with Takeda s Translational Research & Early Clinical (TREC) organization.
  • Interfaces with internal partners, including DMPK and DSRE, to align on portfolio priorities and execution.
  • Partners with HR to identify and develop talent locally while fostering collaborative opportunities across Takeda s network.


  • Leads immunology researchers at Takeda San Deigo (TCAL) to support the delivery of a strong sustainable pipeline for the GI therapeutic area.
  • Ensures alignment on portfolio strategy with key internal partners, the GI Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) and GI Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU), under common governance for GI programs through the GI Matrix Team.
  • Makes strategic decisions to prioritize opportunities for Immunology in consultation with the Immunology Unit Head, with a view to maximizing how Takeda s Immunology network and platforms can serve its core therapeutic areas.
  • Interfaces with other TCAL leaders to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately to highest priority programs in Takeda s GI research portfolio.
  • With an externally-facing mindset, seeks, evaluates and prioritizes preclinical as well as clinical in-licensing opportunities for the GI and Immunology area.
  • Serves as an internal champion for strategically aligned business development opportunities and ensures success of Takeda s collaborations and partnerships.
  • Is a key collaborator in the global Therapeutic Area Unit, working with development, commercial, translational medicine, and regulatory colleagues to support Takeda s business needs.
  • Responsible for budget and human resource accountability of Immunology Unit staff at TCAL.
  • Supports the Immunology Head to formulate strategies for value creation, as well as in organizational development.
  • Coordinates the evaluation and review of data, sets clear priorities, ensures that resources are allocated commensurate to portfolio priorities, and facilitates problem-solving in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Provides immediate supervision for managers and/or senior professional employees.
  • Supports Immunology Unit goal setting and measures and tracks achievement of key performance indicators.
  • In close partnership with HR business partners, develops talent within the department, providing performance feedback and training opportunities.
  • Implements initiatives and best practices to ensure an open and free scientific culture rich in diversity.
  • Provides scientific expertise to facilitate the success of GI and Immunology programs in Takeda.
  • Acts as an alternate for the Immunology Head in internal and external interfaces.
  • Coordinates high-level cross-divisional/departmental activities.
  • Represents multiple dimensions of Company's business; capable of representing Company's interests at meetings (incl. international conferences).
  • Keeps up with the up-to-date scientific advancement (e.g. competitive situation, new technologies and partnerships) and is well informed about current regulatory (FDA etc.) requirements and trends.
  • Conducts other work as directed by supervisor.


  • Has a Ph.D. and/or M.D. with at at least 10 years of Industry / managerial experience.
  • Is highly knowledgeable in Drug Discovery, and specifically in the Immunology and GI Immunology areas, from target identification through late preclinical research.
  • Has successfully developed and implemented business strategies.
  • Has successfully managed multidisciplinary project teams / partnerships to achievement of milestones, including experience advancing programs to IND stage.
  • Is comfortable with multi-tasking, highly collaborative, and thrives in a dynamic matrix environment.
  • Has a proven track record of strong leadership and management skills.
  • Has a proven track record of leading multiple inflammation/ immunology research programs and accomplishment as evidenced by quality and quantity of publications/ inventions.
  • Shows cross-cultural understanding and the ability to leverage diverse talents to maximize organizational productivity.
  • Demonstrates independent thought/ creativity in science and success in coordinating and executing research to further corporate goals.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, and conveys ideas in logically and scientifically concise manner.
