- Provides project management and leadership skills to ensure cross-functional, cross-divisional project plans are in place. The TREC GPM will drive the execution of these plans to advance early development assets from Discovery to Therapeutic Area Unit (TAU) transition at the first major clinical development decision. Responsibilities include strategic direction and translating the cross-divisional, integrated GPT product/program strategy into an executable plan using innovative approaches to ensure rapid and effective decision making; driving the team to achieve clarity on issues and focus on effective contingencies; interfacing with management and influencing decision-making, monitoring slippage, gaps, risks or areas for innovation/acceleration and developing strategies to get back on plan and navigating the team through the internal governance for projects.
- The TREC GPM works closely together with the Global Program Leader (GPL), TAUs, Drug Discovery Units (DDUs), Translational Clinical Scientists, TREC Leadership and other R&D and Commercial functions, to ensure that the medical, scientific and commercial strategy is integrated into an operational plan.
- This role may also lead key initiatives that have cross-functional or cross-divisional impact and that are critical to the objectives of TREC, R&D and/or global business objectives.
- This role may have direct people management responsibilities.
- Identifies and drives innovative process improvements for TREC with significant organizational impact. The TREC GPM will take on, as needed, non-project responsibilities, which can include project management processes and systems which will help bridge innovation across programs and ensure budgets/timelines are aligned to support innovative thinking.
- Lead the project planning efforts of the Global Product Team (GPT), organize joint Project Teams in the case of Alliance projects, or other cross-functional teams in defining and implementing the asset strategy and operational plan..
- Responsible for coordinating governance approvals for key project deliverables.
- Proactively identify and drive project and resource priorities that align with the business objectives.
- In conjunction with the Center for External Ization (CEI), support Business Development in-licensing activities. Responsible for leading the project planning efforts of a cross-functional global team within R&D to provide a thorough technical assessment, including development costs and timelines, to support the business case of potential in-licensed compounds (due diligence).
- Addresses and resolves project challenges, keeping leadership informed of critical considerations (e.g., resources, performance concerns). Provides clarity and direction in urgent or unexpected situations.
- Establishes, communicates and executes plans resulting in achievement of project goals.
- Drives and manages the creation of project strategies and prepares/presents these strategies to key stakeholders and decision-makers
- Provides clear and targeted messaging to teams, translating corporate priorities into clear and meaningful team goals.
- Provides direction and obtains buy-in of all team members to integrated asset strategy.
- Identifies opportunities to accelerate the project execution where possible while maintaining high quality standards.
- Continuously and efficiently manage stakeholders at various levels and across functions.
- Responsible for collaborating with TAUs especially when projects are close to transitioning into late stage development
- As a member of GPT leadership during the TREC phase, the TREC GPM will attend and facilitate GPT meetings. With input from the GPL, ensure agendas are appropriate to enable key discussions and decisions within the team. As the program transitions, the TREC GPM will move to a more agenda based need to attend GPT discussions.
- Partners with the GPL to lead and manage the global, cross-functional, cross-divisional GPT through the project plan execution during the TREC phase and hold to the highest standards for operational excellence in drug development
- Drives team deliverables for project completion for assigned products in the early phases of drug development
- Proactively identify potential issues or obstacles and achieves resolution or plans contingencies and follow issues through to resolution ensuring that all GPT issues arrive at a singular conclusion or recommendation.
- Partners with the GPL to provide financial oversight for global, cross-divisional budgets in early drug development projects. Includes consolidation, vetting and prioritization of program spending risks and opportunities. TREC GPM will ensure that budgets are aligned with the cross-functional plans, Asset Strategy and TREC Strategy.
- Manages timelines for assets from Discovery until TAU transition and is accountable for reporting the progress of these timelines to various stakeholders.
- Leads the GPT project risk management process in the team and generates the cross-functional, cross-divisional project risk register for assigned products. Independently resolves complex issues and competing priorities that may impact achievement of goals, and creates mitigation plans and drives to resolution.
- Works closely with the GPL for a product to balance operational execution with R&D and commercial strategy.
- provides regular and ad-hoc project status reports.
- Participates, as needed, in the annual portfolio analysis process to ensure accurate information and timelines are completed to support project recommendations to Senior Management.
- Provides direction and mentors junior colleagues in working strategically and driving for results; helps them break down problems into manageable pieces; looks for opportunities for junior PMs to demonstrate their abilities to larger audiences; uses effective coaching techniques to refocus energy and address frustrations; leads by example (e.g. maintains composure under pressure).
- Generates collaboration, cooperation and communication globally across divisions and functions and between regional representatives in the team as well as with applicable Alliance partners (by leveraging the experience and knowledge of a diverse workforce crossing R&D, Commercial etc) to ensure team goals are achieved.
- Competent about application of project management processes, tools and techniques to meet project requirements.

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor s Degree science or business-related field
- Advanced degree in science or business strongly preferred
- Detailed and in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical industry with a focus on early drug development (i.e. Discovery, Regulatory, Early Clinical).
- Substantial experience (6-8 years) leading complex pharmaceutical project deliverables in a multi-disciplinary, global environment.
- Proven leadership experience in managing matrix teams, influencing outcomes and key project decisions, and strategic problem-solving ability.
- Proven leadership skills for innovative thinking.
- Substantial experience in intercultural cooperation.
- Proven ability to communicate clearly and present key information objectively and collaborate effectively with management.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate/prepare presentations for management.
Knowledge and Skills
- Project leadership and/or management skills for programs in the preclinical to early clinical development pahse are required.
- Knowledge of Therapeutic Area (clinical, regulatory guidance and study conduct) preferable
