I'm a bench scientist looking to switch career into SAS programming in clinical trials. I'm finishing with a local training class focused on SAS prgramming in clinical environment. And I have basic knowledge of statistics, database management and computer programming. I have been looking for some SAS entry-level or intership postions in pharma or CROs, but got no success so far. Looks like all the positions in the market all require a minimum of 3-5 yr working experinece.

Can anyone here give me some advice on how to land an entry level position in SAS programming? There must be some way, cuz nobody was born to have that kind of experience.

Thanks so much in advance.

SAS (previously "Statistical Analysis System"1) is a software suite developed by SAS Institute for advanced analytics, multivariate analyses, business intelligence, data management, and predictive analytics.

SAS was developed at North Carolina State University from 1966 until 1976, when SAS Institute was incorporated. SAS was further developed in the 1980s and 1990s with the addition of new statistical procedures, additional components and the introduction of JMP. A point-and-click interface was added in version 9 in 2004. A social media analytics product was added in 2010.

In reply to the original question, you may want to talk with an immigration lawyer specialist, who can help you navigate the pathways.

I am a bench scientist and planning to transition to SAS programming. I have heard of the Philadelphia University SAS certification. I believe that there is an interview. Who conducts these interviews and what do they ask? Any info on the interview process is appreciated.

Thank you.

In my opinion, the Phila-U SAS program is THE only way to break into the Clinical SAS career field. The clinical part is very complex and makes up almost 75% of clinical programming. The SAS part is the very easy part. The internship is actually an employment offer in disguise.
Most of the pharmaceutical companies in the area (PA/NJ/NY) would only take Phila-U trainees.

The Philadelphia University SAS training is pretty good and their success rate is pretty high although I don't know how it's going to be in this economy. I took it about 1.5years ago and was placed in a full time position. I wasn't an experienced SAS programmer and knew several people in the class who had never used SAS. I think no matter what the industry, they are going to require some experience. I don't think that I would have broken into the industry without the program but one never knows!

Good Luck!

Try academic medical centers. I know of several here who hire SAS programers to build data bases, all of the IT depts have SAS programers, I dont know their education level they require. But it would be a great place to start.

The SAS program you are talking about is quite expensive. A friend of mine went through the program couple of years ago. Based on his feedbac: They only admit candidates with several years of SAS experience and re-train them with clinical stuff. So really they don't do much than re-directed already talented SAS professionals.

Covance has been looking for a lot of SAS people in their biometrics department (Princeton, NJ) and I know there's been a lot of demand for temps. Not sure about the experience requirement though

That's too expensive to learn SAS from the above mentioned program. You can actually learn SAS via Online SAS training program and sit for SAS Base and Adv exams!

I took the evening classes at Arcadia U (Glendside, PA) which is taught by the same instructors. However the caveate is they don't do internship placement, it's much less expensive than the one at PhilaU but lasts quite longer (two semesters - 8 mos). I probably will have to take the PhilaU classes again if I can't find an entry level positions by next summer :-(

I have transitioned from working in the lab to SAS Programming. I agree that it is very difficult to find an entry level SAS programming position since most companies are looking to hire programmers with at least two years of experience. I took the certificate program at Philadelphia University. It cost me about 7500 dollars for the three months. I would recommend it if you have the three months free. Towards the end of the program, companies come to interview interested candidates. I think almost everyone from my class was placed in a position.
It was well worth it! The website is below.

I hope this helps!

I'm also interested in finding entry level SAS programming work - what type of training class did you attend? Would you recommend it to others?

I'd be interested in hearing any answers to your question as well!
